Welcome to Our Network of Expatriates in Kenya!

I'm truly sorry that you got robbed at night. I've lived in Nairobi for 4 years, and have never been robbed by anyone outside of my apartment. Then again I never walk around at night after 6,and I never take motorcycle taxis because i don't feel safe. The Mombasa beach boys are well known for being gigolos. They claim to be Masai, but in reality are Kikuyu. It's unfortunate that they have no other way to earn a living.

I thought of it first that he might have arranged the robbery. But then he took really good care of me the rest of my stay and became a good friend. He was older than other guys, 38, with a family, and I met him because he was my snearkling guide. He works for himself selling tours at the beach, speaks 5 languages including2 which I speak and doing tours for 15 years. I would rather plan my next trip with him than with any tour company. I organized this safari trip with Wild safari and it was really bad.

Tom Ocharo, the guy in charge did not even spoke normal English. All was screwed up and trip was terribly disorganized and exhausting. I heard about Lamu , everything you said. It was my first trip to Africa, learning experience. You should consider that part of the reason that we love to travel is because it'a s learning experience.

I've learned so much on my travels. Every time that I go on safari I learn what to pack, and what to avoid packing. I'm sure that your next trip will be better. Yanochka; I have so often come across this, where a guy befriends, looks after you and so on. You then get him to arrange your tour. He asks for payment up front, then disappears. Or he might start hassling you for money, saying that he needs school fees, money for a sick relative and so on.

Of course he is going to be nice!

My recommendation, based on my experience of living in Kenya However nice he appeared to be. You can't be absolutely sure that he wasn't in on the robbery, for example. I most definitely wouldn't go with someone who sells tours on the beach. BTW I wouldn't condemn a tour operator for not using 'normal English'.

Please remember that English is not the first language of many Kenyans. I am sorry to hearabout yor experience, sometimes learnning happens the hard way. I am a white woman who ahs travelled around Kenya single and in company. The beach boys or other interested follower usually disappear quickly if talked firmly. I have had oly very few encourter and none very serious I do't move in dark in unfamiliar ground.

I got rid of the beach boys i Kilifi by choosing one random and taking his phone number and promising t think and contac him whenever I knew what I wanted the whole week I didn't know yet, but both him and the others lef alone 'cause I was saying not yet decided.

I would also recommend to be a bit alert with the new friend. Some Kenyans see the wazungus as walking wallets and to take advantage is sometimes too tempting although they can be patient.
